Condimaniac’s Top 10 Hot Sauces 2019

The hot sauce scene is growing, with new and amazing sauces being created every single day. To celebrate the creations of our fellow producers I’ve decided to put together our list of the top 10 hot sauces that I’ve discovered this year. The list is in no particular order, all these sauces are different and wonderful in their own right.

1. Wiltshire Chilli Farm - Reaper Habanero

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Heat:🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

You need this in your life if you like it hot. It’s like the S&M of the sauce world. Pleasure and pain all at the same time.

I came across this spicy little number as part of our collab with Hot Sauce Society earlier this year. I met Allie, the lovely organiser of the event, in a pub local to us both in South London. She came baring hot sauce and in the run up to the festival I reviewed a selection of sauces that were being featured at the event.

2. Karyo - Satan’s Gravy

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Heat:🔥🔥🔥

Another sauce introduced to us by the wonderful event that is Hot Sauce Society. Karyo are actually a band based in London, UK that just happen to make amazing hot sauce as merch.

I actually met Karyo at the festival in April and the darling lads has our review framed and on display. I even got a cheeky vodka soaked tomato free in return for my kind words!

3. Secret Aardvark – Habanero Hot Sauce

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Heat:🔥🔥🔥

Secret Aardvark, a hot sauce originating in Portland USA, made it’s way to us via our lovely friends at HeatSupply. HeatSupply are a Netherlands based hot sauce marketplace that have an amazing range of spicy products (Including our own HERE).

The one is chunky and satisfying. Habaneros are my fav pepper and this does them all sorts of justice.

4. Hendy Farms – Mango Habanero Hot Sauce

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Heat:🔥🔥🔥

Hendy Farms are a Mango Farm based in Ghana, Africa. After getting some help from a charitable Brit their lovely mango habanero sauce is starting to make waves in the UK market.

You can’t beat fresh ingredients from the source and that’s what this one delivers. Hilariously I went on their site to get a little more background info and noticed they’re using our picture to promote the sauce. Cute.

5. Tubby Tom’s – The Squealer

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Heat:🔥🔥🔥

I’ve got a lot of time for Tom. He seems like a nice chap and even better he makes nice sauce that’s full of character. He’s scaled up his business over the last 4 years from humble beginnings in his flat to his own, rather impressive, unit and it’s a great story to watch unfold. Follow his Instagram, honestly it’s great.

His Squealer sauce is a great all-rounder well balanced and medium spicy. You can check out his pretty impressive range below.

6. Shart – Scorpion

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Heat:🔥🔥🔥

The first sauce that was sent to me from Sweden. Shart definitely wins the prize for presentation. Made in a small town called Viken.

‘Shart’ actually means ‘A must’ in Uzbek. Although these guys are Swedish, so I can only assume they’re making a joke about the cross between a shit and fart. Nice. I actually gave both their Scorpion sauce and the super-hot a 4 but this one wins for me, as the slightly more tempered heat allows the flavour to shine.

7. Barnfathers – Pineapple Hot Sauce

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Heat:🔥🔥

Hailing from Hackney, London I picked up this sauce when dropping off some of my own at one of our stockists The Spice Shop. I loved the label so grabbed it. It just shows that when you can’t taste something, having a great label is massively important.

This really is a gateway sauce. Easy on the taste buds and not too hot but interesting enough to remind people that there’s more to life that Sriracha and Tabasco.

8. Glenroy’s - Bunkum Bay Hot Sauce

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Heat:🔥🔥🔥

We’re starting to see a trend here. This is another sauce that I picked off whilst dropping off some of our own at The Brodaway Deli in east London. They have an amazing selection there and really care about the quality of the products.

This is the best use of spices I’ve ever seen in a sauce. They don’t say exactly what’s in there but it’s delicate and feels natural, with lots of lovely little chunks. It’s an amazing insight into another culture and their flavours. Can’t recommend enough.

9. Peckham sauce Co – Batch one

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Heat:🔥🔥🔥🔥

I couldn’t do a top 10 list this year without a mention for the Peckham lot. Trailblazers of the scene they’re one of the few fermented sauces in this list. Fermented hot sauce is really difficult to get right as you need to balance the flavour whilst using enough vinegar to kill the bacteria and stop it fermenting in the bottle.

Luckily these guys nail it. It’s sharp and fresh with lots of character. It also comes in a cool little bottle, so had my vote.

10. Naga Dips – Peri-peri

The most recent addition to our top 10 list. I met the Naga dips lot in our local town of Rochester at a vegan market and sampled a bunch of their wares. This one stood out as that peri-peri flavour really cut through the mix of garlic and sugar they have going on.

I’ve used this on everything since, but weirdly enough most commonly in cooking. It just works when frying things up.
